Associative Economics

The Economics of Education: Literacy / Pedagogy / Funding

Details of the background of the project including a report of the first event are available here:

The 2012 Economic Literacy Project event has been cancelled - see the message below:

Dear Economic Literacy Project Conference Participants,

We are writing to let you know that the conference scheduled for Aug 16-18 this summer at Hawthorne Valley has been canceled. This was not an easy decision to make as we hold this initiative to further develop the way economics is taught and practiced in Waldorf schools very dear. The reasons are numerous, but we feel that the attendance, particularly of teachers, was not adequate to foster the depth of dialogue, experience, and possibility for co-created change that we had hoped would mark the heart of the time together.

We do not sense any waning of interest in the topics and issues. Instead, the timing of August and the need for people to self-fund their transportation raised a barrier to participation. We did have more subsidies and funding for the first gathering held last year than was available this year.

We invite your thoughts on how to continue to develop this impulse designed to awaken economic consciousness (based on Rudolf Steiner's insights) in how economics is taught in Waldorf schools, how schools think economically as organizations, and then how they ground themselves as part of their wider economic communities. We will be reflecting on all this over the next months, and considering ways to go forward that would make it easier for those interested and those who need to participate to do so. In the meantime, we encourage you to use the Yahoo group that was established as a resource base, post to it as you have material to add, and invite others interested to join in the group to add their wisdom.

We hope that this announcement has not caused you any undue inconvenience. We knew at the outset that the number of participants and financing would determine whether or not we would hold the conference. We were a little later making the decision than we hoped, but to be honest we wanted to give it our best effort to inform and register participants. Within the next two weeks we will refund your payments or deposits, either by reversing your credit card charge or issuing you a check.

Please feel free to be in touch with any of us with your thoughts. We will maintain the interest list and be back in touch when there are some clear next steps.

Warmly,

John Bloom
